• British America Tobacco have made a strategic acquisition of a company called CN Creative which makes electronic cigarettes; the New Scientist says that a tobacco giant helping you quit smoking is a welcome change.

This week, the UK had the starkest warning yet of the imminent energy shortage.

In the next few weeks alone, we will lose around 10% of our capacity to generate energy, as old coal and oil-fired power plants close. The chief executive of the energy regulator Ofgem, Alistair Buchanan, predicts a near crisis. We could start to see blackouts as early as 2015.

In the last couple of weeks, under the radar, the Supreme Court has ruled on the case of Lloyds TSB Foundation for Scotland and the Lloyds Banking Group.

As I understand it, the heart of the dispute is a view by the Foundation that the commitment by the bank to giving 1% of pre-tax profits annually meant one thing. The bank said it meant another.
