Capitalism for a new world

27th October 2011 by Amanda Long

What do we make of the protesters against capitalism at St Pauls?

Our media is full of judgements and discussion: we can ignore the protesters, we can consider the irony of their crusade whilst they tweet on mobile phones and wear branded clothing, we can point out that we are all in some way supporters of global capitalism.

What we can't do is avoid the fact that there is an underlying trend of anger and disappointment towards inequality. Also, that inequality has moved up the scale in society and there is increasingly a call from different corners to address its extending reach.

One key message at the protest is that 'capitalism is in crisis' - or is it more the results of the capitalism our world has so far pursued that needs to be focussed on?

If there is public support for the protest as much of the media suggests - then there is real opportunity being flagged here. Not just to innovate capitalism for a new world - aligned with long term sustainability. Most importantly, there is the opportunity to engage the public in that re-invention of capitalism.
