Mindset change to learn from nature

For anyone who missed Tomorrow's Company Conference today on 'Learning from Nature: Tomorrow's Natural Business': lots of super presentations and food for thought.

The essence in picking up on biomimicry - is in the macro as well as the micro. So not just individual examples of businesses engaging in innovation of new products directly aligned with examples from nature, but also the bigger picture of the need not just to mimic nature but to see ourselves as part of the planetary ecosystem and act accordingly. Not just to learn from it but in fact live it. There is a fundamental need for a mainstream mindset change from masters of the universe to part of the universe. Then there is the behaviour change that needs to follow.

The core of the discussion comes down to belief and behaviour change. We understand the why? Resource constraint, population growth and other drivers for change are clear. We even get how to do some of it. Examples abound and did at the conference today. However we are still lacking the will to engage. Whilst government thinks business will do it, and business thinks government will do it, and individuals think they can't make a difference on their own and the myriad of vested interest continue to seek returns - we'll get limited traction. The phrase 'if we do what we've always done we'll get what we've always got' fits. As society re-shapes itself to face this age of transformation, collective behaviours driven by new collectively formed beliefs will help drive the will to change. It might be through a broader acceptance of the real value of water in our lives, or through a better understanding of the real value of plants and green space to our everyday existence that we ultimately start to live more aligned lives.
